2024 CALL FOR CONFERENCE SESSIONS

The American Association for Italian Studies invites members to help shape the intellectual trajectory of the next annual conference by proposing panels and roundtables for AAIS 2024. 

The conference will take place in person at the Istituto Sant’Anna in Sorrento, Italy - Thursday through Sunday, June 6-9. 

In consultation with the Conference Subcommittee, which includes representatives from the Association’s three Caucuses, we have taken some measures that we hope will allow us to engage with issues and currents in North America, where the Association is located, and which intersect, refract, and illuminate currents in Italian Studies that are not limited to a contemporary frame or context. 

The Call to Conference for AAIS 2024 maintains the Association’s historical practice of accepting pre-constituted panels and proposals from members and, at the same time, proposes several themes that also engage with our Sorrento geo-location. 

AAIS 2024

Keynote Theme: “Diasporic Italies, Diasporic Italians”

Keynote co-presenters in dialogue with this theme and each other: author Claudia Durastanti (Un giorno verrò a lanciare sassi alla tua finestra, A Chloe, per le ragioni sbagliate, Cleopatra va in prigione, La straniera) and Ubah Cristina Ali Farah, author of Madre piccola, Il comandante del fiume, and Le stazioni della luna. 

 

Suggested topics for panels and roundtables
In addition to the AAIS practice of inviting proposals for panels and roundtables, 
members are especially encouraged to consider proposing panels (either fully constituted or by way of a call) that address the following, transhistorical themes:

Conference Awards 

The Graduate Student Travel Award is open to all graduate students. Six awards of $500 will be awarded via an application process that will be advertised. Deadline: March 1, 2024.

The 2024 AAIS Book Prize is already open for submissions. Categories: Literary and Cultural Studies; Visual Studies (including Art History, Film and Media); History Society, and Politics (including Intellectual History and Philosophy); and First Book. Submission deadline: January 15, 2024. Awards announced at the banquet, June 8, 2024. For information, contact Nicoletta Marini-Maio (marinin@dickinson.edu). 

Please note: any author submitting a book for prize consideration must be a member in 2023 (the year in which the book was published) and 2024 (the year in which the award will be made). No book will be submitted to the jury by an author who does not meet these criteria. 

The Women’s Studies Caucus (WSC) Award is open to ABD doctoral students, postdoctoral researchers, and adjunct faculty members who will present their research on any aspect of women’s and gender studies at the annual AAIS conference.

Continued Innovations, AAIS 2024

Executive Council Conference Series III: “Critical Conversations in Transnational Italian Studies”
AAIS 2024 will feature, for the third time, a series, proposed, organized, and sponsored by the Executive Council that seeks to highlight expanded canonical parameters of research unfolding across myriad inter-related subfields in the humanities, the arts, cultural studies, and the social sciences. A specific objective of the ECCS is to contribute to field-wide initiatives increasing the representations of voices and viewpoints that have historically been under-represented in the Association, its events, and membership. 

ECCS III is co-curated by Serena Bassi (Yale University), Loredana Polezzi (SUNY-Stony Brook), and Giulia Riccò (University of Michigan). 

The Series will begin with an online Giornata di Studio available to all members and scheduled for Friday, March 29 which links to panels at our in-person June conference.  

Conference Platform for the Program
As part of continued efforts to trim our carbon footprint, AAIS 2024 will continue using this webiste to manages the registration, and the Program.

AAIS 2024 “State of Affairs”
The program will feature a “round-up” panel on the last day (Sunday, June 9) meant to take the pulse of what is heard, noticed, and perceived of the conference proceedings. 

The 2024 AAIS Business Meeting will take place online Tuesday, June 17, 2024. All members are invited to attend. Action items are anticipated. 

AAIS 2024 continues with the new practice, part of the Association’s efforts toward greater inclusion, of inviting graduate students at the PhD level (not only ABD) to participate. No supporting letter from the dissertation director is required.  

MEMBERSHIP AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

PLEASE NOTE CHANGES

For panels, roundtable and individual proposals to be considered, your AAIS 2023 membership must be current and active. 

  • You will then be required to renew your AAIS membership by February 1, 2024 for the coming year. 
  • When you renew in 2024, your Association membership will be valid until January 31, 2025. 
  • Panels with participants who are not active members will not be accepted. 
  • All conference participants must register for the conference, and pay registration fees (different from membership dues). 

Registration fees will be announced shortly. 

Please note: Payments for both membership and conference registration fees will be processed online-only.

REVISED PRACTICE FOR CfP CIRCULATION 

PLEASE READ: 

- CfPs (for proposed panels and roundtable) will not be submitted to the conference committee for approval.

- CfPs must be posted directly to the dedicated page on the AAIS website: please go to the Member Center and click on the Listings tab to start posting.

- A weekly reminder about available CfPs will be sent to all members. 

- January 21, 2024: All abstract proposals proposals due to panel and roundtable organizers with title, brief abstract (150-200 words), and short bio.  

- February 1, 2024: All completed panels and roundtables due (please see below for proper formatting - to be submitted via the Member Center).

- February 1, 2024: All proposed Conference participants must have renewed and current, active membership (with paid membership dues). 

- February 23, 2024: Organizers will receive notification of panel acceptances. 

- April 21, 2024: Early Bird Conference Registration closes.

- May 15, 2024: All AAIS 2024 participants must have paid conference registration fees.

L’American Association for Italian Studies invita socie e soci a contribuire alla traiettoria intellettuale della prossima conferenza annuale, proponendo panels e tavole rotonde per AAIS 2024.
 
La conferenza si terrà, in presenza, presso l’Istituto Sant’Anna di Sorrento, in Italia, da giovedì 6 giugno fino a domenica 9 giugno.
 
In consultazione con il sub-comitato organizzativo della conferenza, che include rappresentanti dei tre Caucuses dell’Associazione, sono state prese alcune direzioni che speriamo ci permetteranno di discutere temi dibattuti in Nord America, dove l’Associazione ha sede, che vadano a intersecare, rifrangere e illuminare temi dell’italianistica non limitati a una cornice di contesto contemporaneo.
 
La call per AAIS 2024 mantiene la pratica storica dell’Associazione di accettare panels pre-costituiti e proposte di panels da parte di soci e socie e, allo stesso tempo, propone temi che siano rilevanti per la sede della conferenza, ovvero Sorrento.

Mantenendo la pratica di accogliere proposte per panels e tavole rotonde, l’AAIS incoraggia  soci e socie, in particolare,  a considerare di proporre panels (sia pre-costituiti, sia come calls for papers) che tocchino le seguenti tematiche trans-storiche

Importante: autori e autrici dei libri proposti per un premio devono avere una membership attiva all’associazione nel 2023 (anno nel quale il libro è stato pubblicato) e nel 2024 (anno nel quale il premio viene annunciato). I libri di autori o autrici che non rispondano a questo criterio non saranno sottoposti alla giuria.
 
Il Women’s Studies Caucus (WSC) Award è aperto a: 

  • studenti e studentesse di dottorato nell’ultima fase di studio (ABD), 
  • ricercatori e ricercatrici post-doc, 
  • docenti non di ruolo  che presentino la propria ricerca su un qualsiasi aspetto di  women o gender studies alla conferenza annuale AAIS.

Innovazioni che ritornano, AAIS 2024

Executive Council Conference Series III: “Critical Conversations in Transnational Italian Studies”
L’AAIS 2024 offrirà, per la terza volta, una serie proposta, organizzata, e sponsorizzata dall’Executive Council con l’intento di dare rilievo all’espansione di parametri di ricerca canonici, che si svolgono nei  molteplici sotto-campi delle discipline umanistiche, le arti, i cultural studies e le scienze sociali, tutti interconnessi fra loro. Uno specifico obiettivo della ECCS è quello di contribuire a iniziative che aumentino la rappresentazione di voci e punti di vista che sono stati storicamente sottorappresentati nell’Associazione, nei suoi eventi e tra soci e socie.
 
L’ECCS III è curato da Serena Bassi (Yale University), Loredana Polezzi (SUNY-Stony Brook), e Giulia Riccò (University of Michigan). 
 
La serie inizierà con una Giornata di Studio virtuale, disponibile a tutte le persone che dispongono di una membership AAIS attiva (soci e socie correnti)  e programmata per il 29 Marzo, che sarà connessa ai panels in presenza della conferenza di giugno.

Piattaforma per il programma
Come parte dei nostri continui sforzi di limitare le emissioni ad impronta di carbonio, AAIS 2024 continuerà ad usare il proprio sito per la registrazione alla conferenza e per il programma. 

AAIS 2024 “Stato delle cose”
Il programma includerà un panel di “riepilogo” che si terrà l’ultimo giorno della conferenza (9 giugno) inteso a valutare cosa si è  sentito, notato, e percepito nel corso della conferenza.

Il 2024 AAIS Business Meeting si terrà online il 17 giugno 2024. Si prevedono la discussione e votazione di vari provvedimenti e si invitano pertanto soci e socie a partecipare attivamente.

Nello sforzo di raggiungere una sempre maggiore inclusività, l’AAIS 2024 continua con la nuova pratica di incoraggiare la partecipazione di studenti e studentesse di dottorato ad ogni livello (non solo in stadio avanzato o ABD). Non si richiede nessuna lettera di conferma.  

REQUISITI PER LA MEMBERSHIP E REGISTRAZIONE

Proposte per panels, tavole rotonde e paper individuali saranno considerate solo in caso di AAIS membership (status di socio o socia) corrente e attiva: 


·       La membership deve essere rinnovata entro il 1 febbraio 2024. 
·       La membership sarà valida fino al 1 gennaio 2025. 
·       Panels composti di persone prive di membership attiva non potranno essere accettati. 
·       Per partecipare alla conferenza è necessario registrarsi e pagare la tassa di registrazione (n.b. diversa dalla membership). 
 
L’ammontare della tassa di registrazione sarà annunciato a breve. 
 
Importante: i pagamenti per la membership e la registrazione dovranno essere  eseguiti unicamente online.
Importante: ogni domanda e in generale corrispondenza va spedita attraverso il link presente sul sito AAIS. Si prega di non scrivere direttamente ai membri dell’Executive Committee.

Le Calls for Papers (CfP), sia per proposte di panels, sia per proposte di tavole rotonde, non vanno sottoposti al comitato organizzativo per essere pre-approvati. 

Le CfPs dovranno essere pubblicati nell’apposita pagina sul sito dell’Associazione: è necessario accedere al Member Center e cliccare sulla casella Listings per  postare i contenuti.
 
Un reminder settimanale con tutte le CfPs disponibili verrà inviato via email a soci e socie con membership attiva.
 
- 21 gennaio 2024: scadenza per inviare gli abstracts, completi di titolo, breve abstract (150-200 parole), e una breve biografia,  a organizzatori e organizzatrici  di panels e tavole rotonde.

- 1 febbraio 2024: tutti i panels e le tavole rotonde completati devono essere inviati all’AAIS utilizzando il formulario online disponibile all’interno del Member Center.
 
- 1 febbraio 2024: Organizzatori e organizzatrici di panels e tavole rotonde e loro partecipanti dovranno avere una membership attiva e corrente (rinnovando  la membership per il 2024). 
 
- 23 Febbraio 2024: organizzatori e organizzatrici dei singoli panels o tavole rotonde riceveranno notifica di accettazione.
 
- 21 Aprile 2024: Chiusura della registrazione alla conferenza a costo ridotto (Early Bird).

- 15 maggio 2024: Chiusura della registrazione alla conferenza, con relativo pagamento della tassa di registrazione (n.b. diversa dalla membership), per ogni  partecipante alla conferenza AAIS 2024.
