The American Association for Italian Studies invites members to help shape the intellectual trajectory of the next annual conference by proposing panels and roundtables for AAIS 2025.

The annual conference will take place, in person only, in Philadelphia, where we will be hosted by the University of Pennsylvania. 

 

AAIS 2025: Performing/Surviving/Resisting

Keynote Presentation: 

Co-presenters: Giuliana Musso and Valentina Mira. 

In addition to each making a presentation involving the themes of the conference, speakers will engage in a dialogue with each other and the audience. 

Keynote Performance: 

Giuliana Musso, Dentro. Una storia vera, se volete. 

Inside. A true story, if you think so. 

A mother discovers the worst of truths. A father innocent until proven guilty. Waves of doctors, social workers, and other “helpers” who don’t really want to know, furthering the secret’s concealment. In the US premier of Dentro, Giuliana Musso, one of Italy’s most interesting voices in contemporary theater, explores the traumatic effects of silence when abuse occurs at home. Dentro is not documentary theater but an investigation of a current happening; it’s not a work about violence but one of exploring the concealment of truth and lost innocence of children. 

In collaboration with Penn Live Arts. 

A bloc of 80 tickets for the Thursday, March 14 and Friday, March 15 performances will be available to registered conference participants. There will be 40 tickets available for each night to AAIS 2025 participants on a first-come, first-served basis. Members will be able to book a discounted ticket ($12) when registering for the conference. After these $12-tickets are sold, tickets will be available at $46 directly through Penn Live Arts’ website.

A broad conference call to disciplines within Italian Studies

Aligned with the AAIS mission, members are invited to propose panels that approach Italian Studies through interdisciplinary and intersectional lenses representing a broad array of approaches and historical contexts.

Conference Awards

  • The Graduate Student Travel Award is open to all current graduate students. Up to six awards of $500 will be awarded via an application process that will be advertised on the website. Deadline for submission: January 10, 2025.

 

  • The 2024 AAIS Book Prize is open for submissions. Categories: 
  • Literary and Cultural Studies (including Theater, Performance, and Critical Theory)
  • Visual Studies (including Art History, Film, Media, etc.)
  • History, Society and Politics (including Intellectual History and Philosophy)
  • First Book
  • English Translation of an Italian Book-Length Scholarly Work
  • English Translation of an Italian Book-Length Literary Work

Deadline for PDF submission for books published in 2024: December 1, 2024. Guidelines and submission forms available on the AAIS website. Awards to be announced at the banquet on March 15, 2025. For specific questions, contact Nicoletta Marini Maio (marinin@dickinson.edu). 

  • Special note: any author submitting a book for prize consideration must be a member in both 2024 and 2025. No book will be submitted to the jury by an author who does not meet these criteria. 

 

  • The Women’s Studies Caucus (WSC) Award is open to all ABD doctoral students and adjunct faculty members who will present their research on any aspect of women and gender studies at AAIS 2025. 
  • The Critical Race, Diaspora and Migrations Caucus (CRDM) welcomes submissions from graduate students and colleagues who have completed their PhD within the last three years (no earlier than June 2022) for the “Outstanding Research Paper Award” based on presentations given at AAIS 2025. Submissions may address any aspect related to critical race, diasporas, and migrations studies. Authors are not required to be current members of the CRDM Caucus. Submissions limited to 3500 words and should include conference panel information. Review will be conducted by current CRDM leadership. 
  • The Film and Media Studies Caucus Prize (FMSC) invites current graduate students and scholars who have completed their PhD no earlier than June 2022 to submit their work, presented at AAIS 2025, for the “Outstanding Research Paper Award.” Papers can cover any topic within the field of Film and Media Studies, and FMS Caucus membership is not required. Papers must be submitted via the AAIS website.

 

Innovations/Continuities AAIS 2025

  • Executive Council Conference Series IV: “Broadening Perspectives, Intersections, Italies” AAIS 2025 will feature, for the fourth time, a series, proposed, organized, and sponsored by the Executive Council that seeks to highlight expanded canonical parameters of research unfolding across myriad inter-related subfields in thehumanities, the arts, cultural studies, and the social sciences. A specific objective of the ECCS is to contribute to field-wide initiatives increasing the representations of voices and viewpoints that have historically been under-represented in the Association, its events, and membership.
  • The ECCS for AAIS 2025 will be co-curated by Kate Driscoll (Duke University) and Eugenio Refini (NYU) and is entitled “Performing Reception: Early Modern Time Warps.” The panel in person in Philadelphia will feature a follow-up virtual Giornata di Studio in late May 2025, date to be announced. 
  • Conference Program: The conference program will be available as a PDF on the Association website. We are in conversation with our web host for a mobile App that might include all the features of our website, and all the conference dedicated pages. Stay tuned for more!
  • The AAIS 2025 General Business Meeting will take place online at noon (Eastern US) Friday, June 6, 2025. All members are invited to attend. Results from the general elections will be shared. 
  • AAIS Breakers: we will continue our practice of “connecting the dots” between early career scholars and graduate students and colleagues at later stages in the profession. If you see someone with a dot on their badge (of whatever color), it means they are “talkable.” 
  • AAIS invites the participation of all graduate students (not only those at the ABD phase) to participate.

  • CfPs (for proposed panels and roundtable) must be posted DIRECTLY to the dedicated page on the AAIS website: please go to the Member Center and click on the Listings tab to start posting.
  • CfPs must NOT be submitted to the conference committee for approval.
  • Weekly reminders about available CfPs will be sent to all members. 

 

- October 25, 2024: All abstract proposals due to panel and roundtable organizers with title, brief abstract (150-200 words), and short bio.

- December 1, 2024: All completed panels and roundtables due (please see below for proper formatting - to be submitted via the Member Center).

- January 2, 2025: Organizers will receive notification of panel acceptances.

  • Active members with membership paid through date 31 January 2025 will have the opportunity to renew their membership starting February 1, 2025.
  • New members or lapsed members, please apply for membership or renew your membership by January 31, 2025.

- February 1, 2025: Conference Registration opens

  • You will not be able to register for the conference without an active membership, but you will be able to renew or join at the time of registration.February 21, 2025: Early Bird Conference Registration closes.

- March 5, 2025: All AAIS 2025 participants must have paid conference registration fees (n.b. different from membership fees).

Inside. A true story, if you think so.

Una madre scopre la peggiore delle verità. Un padre innocente a meno che non ne sia provata la colpevolezza. Ondate di dottori, assistenti sociali, e altri “aiutanti” che non vogliono veramente sapere, rendendo più oscura la dissimulazione del segreto. Nella prima statunitense di Dentro, Giuliana Musso, una delle voci più interessanti del teatro italiano contemporaneo, esplora gli effetti traumatici del silenzio nel caso di abusi domestici. Dentro non è teatro documentario, ma un’investigazione su un fatto attuale; non è un lavoro sulla violenza, ma un’esplorazione sull’occultamento della verità e sull’innocenza perduta dei bambini. 

In collaborazione con Penn Live Arts. 

Un blocco di 80 biglietti per gli spettacoli di giovedì 14 marzo e di venerdì 15 marzo sarà disponibile per chi si registrerà alla conferenza. In ognuna delle due serate saranno offerti 40 di questi biglietti scontati, destinati esclusivamente alle persone registrate alla conferenza AAIS 2025 che ne abbiano fatto richiesta (first come, first serve). Importante: chiunque intenda partecipare al 2024 AAIS Book Prize deve avere una membership attiva all’associazione nel 2024 (anno nel quale il libro è stato pubblicato) e nel 2025 (anno nel quale il premio viene annunciato).   • Il Film and Media Studies Caucus (FMSC) invita dottorand*, student* postdoc, e studios* che abbiano conseguito il dottorato non prima di giugno 2022 a sottoporre i loro lavori, presentati alla conferenza AAIS 2025, per l’“Outstanding Research Paper Award”. I saggi possono trattare qualsiasi argomento afferente al campo dei Film and Media Studies, e non è necessario essere membri del FMSC. I lavori dovranno essere inviati alla leadership del FMSC tramite il sito web dell’AAIS. 

 

Innovazioni/Continuità AAIS 2025

  • Executive Council Conference Series IV: “Broadening Perspectives, Intersections, Italies” (Ampliare le prospettive, le intersezioni, le Italie): l’AAIS 2025 offrirà, per la quarta volta, una serie proposta, organizzata e sponsorizzata dall’Executive Council con l’intento di dare rilievo all’espansione di parametri di ricerca canonici, che si svolgono nei molteplici sotto-campi delle discipline umanistiche, le arti, i cultural studies e le scienze sociali, tutti interconnessi fra loro. Uno specifico obiettivo della ECCS è quello di contribuire a iniziative che aumentino la rappresentazione di voci e punti di vista che siano stati storicamente sottorappresentati nell’Associazione, nei suoi eventi e tra i membri.
  • The ECCS per AAIS 2025 sarà curato da Kate Driscoll (Duke University) e Eugenio Refini (NYU) ed è intitolato “Performing Reception: Early Modern Time Warps”. Il panel in presenza, a Philadelphia, avrà una coda virtuale con una Giornata di Studio nel tardo maggio 2025.

AAIS 2025: sintesi delle scadenze

LEGGERE PER FAVORE: 
 

  • Le Calls for Papers (CfP), sia per proposte di panels, sia per proposte di tavole rotonde, NON vanno sottoposte al comitato organizzativo per essere pre-approvate. 
  • Le CfPs dovranno essere pubblicate nell’apposita pagina sul sito dell’Associazione: è necessario accedere al Member Center e cliccare sulla casella Listings per postare i contenuti.
  • Un reminder settimanale con tutte le CfPs disponibili verrà inviato via email a tutti i membri con membership attiva.

 

- 25 ottobre 2024: scadenza per inviare gli abstracts, completi di titolo, breve abstract (150-200 parole), e una breve biografia, a chi ha organizzato panels e tavole rotonde.  

- 1 dicembre 2024: tutti i panels e le tavole rotonde completati devono essere inviati all’AAIS utilizzando il formulario online disponibile all’interno del Member Center.
 
- 2 Gennaio 2025: Organizzatori e organizzatrici di panels e tavole rotonde e loro partecipanti dovranno avere una membership attiva e corrente (rinnovando la membership per il 2025). 

  • Chi abbia una membership attiva, pagata fino al 31 Gennaio 2025, avrà la possibilità di rinnovarla a partire dal 1 Febbraio 2025. 
  • Chi non abbia mai avuto una membership, o chi abbia una membership scaduta, deve diventare membro, o rinnovare la membership entro il 31 Gennaio 2025.

- 2 Gennaio 2025: organizzatori e organizzatrici dei singoli panels o tavole rotonde riceveranno notifica di accettazione.

- 1 febbraio 2025: apre la registrazione alla conferenza

  • Non è possibile registrarsi alla conferenza senza una membership attiva, ma è possibile rinnovare la membership, oppure attivarla al momento della registrazione. 


- 21 febbraio 2025: Chiusura della registrazione alla conferenza a costo ridotto (tariffa Early Bird, quota da annunciare).

- 5 marzo 2025: Chiusura della registrazione alla conferenza, con relativo pagamento della tassa di registrazione (n.b. diversa dalla membership), per ogni partecipante alla conferenza AAIS 2025.
